My research is broadly focused on the contexts of oppression, supremacy, and power within social systems and communities, and expressly on how the discourses of masculinity in men’s communities serve to supply philosophies of domination and supremacy with overt and covert support. In outdoor recreation and tourism contexts cultures of male supremacy, social dominance, and gender traditionalism have contributed to conventions of participation that are often homogeneous and do not represent Canadian diversity. These philosophies of domination, supremacy, and control privilege White men’s experience and interpretations of acceptable participation. My research is critical of these dominance discourses and highlights the essential components of male and White supremacism that undergird sexist, racist, ableist, and anti-LGBTQ2S+ worldviews.
